I think I’m finally recovered from my multiple trips last month.

I didn’t realize just how tiring it can be!

Now that I feel a bit more like myself, I wanted to start sharing with you a few things I learned at ICON17.

Anyone who tells you backlinks aren’t necessary is someone you probably shouldn’t listen to.

Backlinks one website mentioning another website and linking to it. It is not merely referencing the website or it’s web address. It has to be a clickable link using an href attribute within the code. It is the difference between https://thathelpfulchick.com and That Helpful Chick.

Even though the first example displays a URL, the search engines do not register this as a backlink. They are usually visually seen with an underline and a different color to the text.

Google actually likes backlinks and relies upon them. The whole idea behind them is that they help to tell Google what is good and useful out there.

Web traffic is the amount of data sent and received by visitors to a web site. This is determined by the number of visitors and the number of pages they visit.

Sites monitor the incoming and outgoing traffic to see which parts or pages of their site are popular and if there are any apparent trends, such as one specific page being viewed mostly by people in a particular country. There are many ways to monitor this traffic.

Check out these articles to find out more info on how you should be tracking your traffic and what to do with the data you find.

Social Proof

“Think of it as building the foundation for massively scalable word-of-mouth.”

Learn the 5 Types of Social Proof

Ever walked past a restaurant with a long line outside, and joined the line because you figured that the food was probably pretty good? If everyone is buying it, it can’t possibly be all bad, right?
That’s social proof in action. We form evaluations about something based on the actions of other people.

It works the same for your website. The comments, like and shares are your Social Proof and can have a massive impact on your ranking.
Check out these two statistics revealed by consumer research around American consumers:
  1. Over 70% of Americans say they look at product reviews before making a purchase.
  2. Nearly 63% of consumers indicate they are more likely to purchase from a site if it has product ratings and reviews.

When you go on Amazon in search of something, do you look at the product reviews before deciding on what to buy?

This was a quick overview of just a few things I picked up at ICON17.

I will go into more details in future emails.

Hope you are having a fantastic week and I’ll talk to soon!
