We started with the ‘base’ which is the piece which will ‘sit’ on top of the coffee table.

We used 2 x’s for the edges, making sure it easily slide on top of the coffee table.



Here is the assembled base sitting on top of the coffee table.

We used 4×8″ for the side frame which will make up the sides of the table top.


Sides firmly attached!



I wanted a center divider to keep ‘his’ and ‘hers’ separate.


Added a couple of 1 x’s for easier attachment of the hinges.


Above is the lid pieces cut out, checking to make sure we measured correctly before attaching. 😉

We used a piano hinge to attach the lids. —>

Then we used a power sander to smooth the edges and corners.


Next we added a dark stain to match the color of the coffee table. 

We also added a coat of polyurethane varnish.

Here is the finished result!
