An important part of keeping your site secure from hackers is to remove the default “admin” user that comes with the default settings in WordPress. First though you need to add a new user and this is a straightforward process as shown in the tutorial video.
Another reason for adding a new user could be that you have someone else writing content for you and they need to have access. There are 5 levels of access available for a user:
Subscriber – can read and comment on posts and pages.
Contributor – can write and edit their own posts until they are published but can’t upload or publish themselves.
Author – can write, upload photos, edit, and publish their own posts.
Editor – has access to all posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, and links.
Administrator – has access to everything, full rights and permissions.
If you need to add an extra user other than yourself think carefully about which role you give them. Remember that an Administrator role has full power over the site, and can add/remove users as well as having complete control over posts, pages, uploaded files, comments, settings, themes, imports, other users. Nothing is off-limits for Administrators, including deleting the entire site so it’s always best just to have one administrator on a site.
A subscriber doesn’t have any editing privileges. These are people who have signed up to receive updates each time you publish a new post. Commenting is the only thing they can do (if you have comments enabled).
A Contributor can create and edit only their own posts, but no one else’s and they can’t publish them. The post needs to be approved and published by the administrator, once published the contributor can’t edit it.
An editor can create, edit, publish, and delete any post or page, their own as well as other users. They can moderate comments and manage categories, tags, and links. Remember, an editor can delete all the posts on your site so only give this role to someone you trust.
An author can only work with their own posts, as well as upload files and images. They can’t create, modify or delete pages or modify posts by other users. Authors can edit comments made on their posts.
