One the trickiest things is finding suitable royalty free images for your posts and finding free image resources. The best thing of course, is to use your own photos, but not everyone can do this.

Finding Images and Adding a Favicon

Finding images and adding a favicon is simple to do, but only when you know how! “Favicon” is another one of those words you’ll hear bandied about and wonder what on earth it means. A favicon is simply that small image you’ll see on a browser tab.what is a favicon

Some webmasters don’t bother with this, but for me it’s one of those small things that adds the professional touch.

How to Add Images

Knowing how to add images is important as people tend to be very visual. Having images to break up your content will encourage  visitors to stay on your site. This tutorial will walk you through how to add images. You can check this post for places to find royalty free images.

Optimize Your Image

Once you’ve found your image you need to make sure it’s “optimized” for the web. This means you want to keep the file size (not the physical size) of the image as small as possible, but so it’s still clear to see. Smaller file sizes are one of the things that will make your website load faster.

You can use an online tool for this, like TinyPNG, it’s very simple to use. I’ll show the steps here and you’ll also be able to see it in the video below.

On the home page click “Drop your .png or .jpg files here!” then browse to the folder with your image and click it.

What is a Featured Image

featured image on Blog RollWhat is a featured image? A featured image is an image that shows on your blog roll excerpt so when visitors land on the page they see an image as well as text.

Themes can use this feature differently, for example:

  • Some themes will display the image you have in the first paragraph of your post. In this case, you don’t need a featured image, adding it would mean the same 2 images showing beside the post excerpt.
  • If the image you have in your first paragraph doesn’t show, this is when you can make use of the featured image.
  • It doesn’t happen often, but some themes support neither of the above, in this case, I would choose a new theme!
